Initiatives and Key Areas of Interest
The Founding Generation established a strong theoretical framework in the Charter of the New Urbanism and is now focused on successfully advocating and implementing projects from the block to the region.
The Next Generation acknowledges that the Founding Generation was not of advanced age or experience when they began to formulate, study, test and promote these principles, so we must likewise embrace the responsibility of looking into the future while addressing the challenges of the present.
Through collaborative interaction and discussion, NextGen has identified the many issues being under addressed or having future potential, which merits our attention and action. These include:
- Engage affordability issues surrounding new, historic, and market-rate housing, as costs continue to rise and unintended gentrification occurs as a function of New Urbanism being an inherently valuable product.
- Retaining a healthy 'messiness' in the order and regulation of determinant site plans, form based code and style-based precedent.
- Advocating the value of New Urbanism within financial and banking systems.
- Integrating green building into the neighborhood, city and regional scales by creating tools and educational resources for LEED-ND projects and promoting otherwise environmental responsible design, construction and planning.
- Analyze and promote financial accountability in now-uncommon forms of delivery, including designer-led development teams.
- Promoting and advancing the principles of New Urbanism in the public eye and public realm through effective media and communication outlets.
- Integrating New Urbanist planning methodologies with various forms of contemporary architectural styles.
- Understanding the smallest stand-alone scales of the transect; urbanism in the hamlet and village.
- Including a healthy diversity of professionals and citizens, especially beyond architects, urban designers and planners.
- Developing the skills of young professionals that can provide effective leadership and problem solving prowess in multi-disciplinary environments.
